Clearly, we haven't done a good enough job explaining Oliver Cromwell!

Being Oxford based... and having worked in premises on Beaumont Street.. the Anarchy fascinates, as does the now long gone Palace where John the sod and Richard the Leon coeur were born to the greatest person in l'histoire Franglais - Eleanor of Aquitaine... otherwise known as Katherine of Hepburn.

There are some pieces of the palace windows... or more likely of the Whitefriars Priory that it became after Edward bequeathed it in fear of St Frideswide... in the car parks behind the buildings to the north. Check them out.

There's one group of people who should have heard of Queen Matilda: readers of Ellis Peters's 'Cadfael' books (my Mum was a devoted fan). Plus those who watched the ITV adaptation, with Derek Jacobi.

Damn - I'm on YouGov's panel but must have missed this... I do find it surprising that Edward IV (an intelligent, interesting and mostly competent ruler) is less well known and barely better thought of than his feeble and inept predecessor Henry VI. Maybe it's Shakespeare's fault for not naming a play after E4, but three after H6 - though the latter are not exactly well-known hits...

On the fame of the Tudors, it's not just TV, though that's a factor - as YouGov's report mentions, it has been one of the most-commonly taught historical periods in English schools for a good while.

"It was Richard III, get over it, Philippa." Absolutely. But oh no, this is going to bring out the Ricardians isn't it..? :-)

I think I'd have ticked 'favourable' for all of them, except Stephen, John, Richard II, Henry VIII, Mary I and Charles I

“But I suspect this is more about trying to stop Scottish and Welsh readers from writing in – good luck with that” - both patronising and full of English Privilege at the same time! 😂😂

I was going to say you should read The Daughter of Time until I saw your footnote! I suspect the great divide in our nation, the North South Divide, divides Ricardians from fans of Henry Tudor (Henricians?), but overall the Republican in me means I’m not unhappy that most of the mediaeval kings, despite romantic tales & Ladybird books, are largely unknown!

I was going to mention the lack of Richard Cromwell especially so as he was our longest lived head of state until E2R surpassed him in the last few years of her reign

Fun Fact: in the old Ducal Palace in Urbino, central Italy there's an apartment where the Old Pretender stayed for a while as guest of the Papacy. The caption on the wall just states the 'King James III of England used to live here' without any context or acknowldgement that he was never a reigning monarch!!!

Not forgetting Henry IX too who was an actual cardinal.
