I’m not sure how you do it on your end, but Sam Freedman on his Substack has set up his election coverage so that you have to choose to opt in by selecting it as an alert in your settings.
+ 1 (or you could even just do your main email as normal and then title some extras appropriately so that non-British-politics-heads can benignly ignore them)
The Home Secretary's justification for the national service scheme is that it will help stop young people being in a social and intellectual bubble. I'd have thought teenagers, who will mostly be at a comprehensive school, or at college, or in their first job, and accomplished social media users, are the group in the population least likely to be in a bubble, unlike, say, pensioners. Maybe it would make more sense to require pensioners (like me) to do 25 days a year, in return for maintaining the triple lock on our pensions
"At the moment my instinct is to do a couple of shorter, more frequent emails a week – each perhaps containing one news bit, and one other section – for the duration of the campaign, but I’ve yet to settle on a plan. Thoughts welcome." Love this idea. I really can't get excited about this election, I hope Labour romp it as predicted. All I want are a couple of brief JE updates a week so I can have a bit of a laugh at how badly the Tories are doing, then I can ignore the rest of the media coverage.
We all know where those who are forced into the armed forces will come and who will be allowed to volunteer for public service. Will the children of the rich (Tory donors) have to do this, of course not, they'll fiddle a way out of it.
I just missed conscription, I'm 80 but friends of mine who didn't spoke of all the skives and fiddles that went and the total waste of money.
You should do the more frequent emails and digest as I am *refusing* to engage in the X/24 hour news cycle on this election. You sifting through this stuff would be an excellent service, especially since your taste in funny/interesting is usually on point.
It's not going to happen because they're going to lose. It's the agonised death throes of a party that's got no clue what they're doing. Next week it will be, I dunno, banning teenagers from going outside without a high-viz tabard on and and adult accompanying them.
I’m sure people over 65 would like the idea of young people being in the army but do they want that more than a GP appointment or functioning NHS diagnostics? Over 65s make up a massive proportion of people sitting on waiting lists, it would be strange for them to suddenly prioritise other’s discomfort over their own ability to lead a normal life
In all seriousness, though, as your coverage is likely to focus to on process, rather than ideology and rhetoric (let’s face it, the current lot have no ideas of any substance and their rhetoric is so tired and tiresome as to be largely undeserving of comment), the political shitshow currently unfolding on these benighted isles is entirely within remit.
Hi Jonn. You could always do what Sam Freedman is doing and have an opt in for those wanting extra political content. Also I first picked up the gossip about an election from your newletter on Wednesday and this was despite the fact I was in one of the major government departments that morning so you were well ahead of the game.
Yes please to more frequent emails during the campaign, especially if Sunak continues his comedy tour.

Came here to say the same!

Love the newsletter. I live in Oz, but follow British current affairs. Would welcome continuing regular updates.
Could you combine your two fortes by doing pieces on interesting constituency boundaries and which Conservatives are going to lose in them?
I do want to know, is York Outer unique and should it be? Also, Isle of Wight is 2 seats now!
I’d love more Jonn Elledge election coverage please! Dail my updates on the latest Tory disaster would perk up my day no end.

Please keep the election updates - love reading your take on it!

I'd be delighted to get your take on the election a couple of times a week - it would cheer me up no end.

I’d be happy to read the thoughts of Jonn Elledge multiple times a day.
