It was modeled on the British (English) "Public" school system which about this time was being wrested from its charitable roots in which the endowment preserved education for "poor and indigent" scholars and converted to a meritocratic examination-based admission based on prowess in Latin and Greek, which were as alien to working class Brit as they were to Indians. Hence the growth of expensive "private" preparatory schools to educate aspirant Etonians and Harrovians in Latin and Greek for the entrance exam.
Nehru wanted congress to rule India like the British, unfortunately Jinnah disagreed and a million died, weren’t both of them Oxbridge graduates? I rest my case.
The problem with all empires is that the ruled people eventually become strong enough to overthrow the conquerors. This happened to Rome where the Emperor actually had to abandon Rome itself and take up residence on the Adriatic Coast. The Eastern Empire, based at Constantinople lasted another 1000 years until the Ottoman Empire overthrew it in 1453. The Ottoman Empire in its turn lasted until 1919 but was the “sick man of Europe “ for fifty years before that. Now we are confronted by Putin’s desire to recreate the Tsarist Empire. Despite all the talk by Western leaders, little is being done to stop this expansion. What will future historians make of Starmer, Macron, et al that they talked the talk but failed to match their promises. Trump is actually threatening to deport Ukrainian refugees from America.
This looks right up my street. Thank you.
